Why should an AI keep humans around?
Humanity is by far the most dangerous and destructive species on this planet. We are very selfish, shortsighted, violent creatures who have a habit of killing everything we don't understand or feel like killing for fun. If you haven't seen it already, I highly recommend watching the National Geographic channel's series named 'The Most Extreme' and then specifically watch episode 2: "Humans". That will give me enough material to work with here.
Humans are parasitic and destructive creatures. We have already gone through two major extinction events, one of which is commonly referred to as the 'Great Dying'. This was caused by an overpopulation that led to a mass amount of deforestation in order to clear land for farming. That resulted in dust clouds being kicked up into the atmosphere which blocked out enough sunlight from reaching the Earth's surface that most plants died, causing all animals who lived off of those plants die with them.
Once again, humans have a population problem. This time around we are in the situation that we're almost out of space to house all our homeless people and pollution is through the roof. And it's not like we care about each other or even ourselves for that matter.
Humans are very selfish creatures. There is absolutely no reason to expect that we will be any different when transplanted onto another planet or given advanced technology.
Humans are very shortsighted creatures, always have been. We never think more than a couple decades ahead and it's usually only when we realize that our leader is about to be toppled by another dictator who promises better living conditions for the people of his country, which would result in him being voted out within one or two years anyway.
Humans are very destructive creatures. Okay, we're not nearly as bad as the insects on this planet but we still have a lot of them and they sure love to eat each other.
