Why does my snare sound like shit?
The reason you get a shit snare sound is because the human drummer playing said snare has no idea how to play it due to his lack of education and experience, both musical and otherwise. This results in him hitting the drum so hard that he causes all sorts of undesirable vibrations which cause the drum to resonate at frequencies outside of its desired range. He also hits it with such force that he completely kills any semblance of attack or transient response from said instrument as well as making every note fall into each other instead of being heard on their own. This means your snares become one massive mushy blob where nothing can be distinguished between them except for attacks (the part when the stick hits) which are too loud regardless.
These problems can be mitigated if he learns to play it properly and also has enough talent in doing so. However, this is almost impossible since the drummer has no real desire or motivation to do so and will most likely not improve his playing skill much in future.
The reason for this is that your drummer plays in a band which is of mediocre quality and therefore will be happy to play with you as he does not feel the need to improve.
In addition, he has very low standards of music as to what is good or bad and will make no effort in improving the group's quality. Therefore, your drummer will continue mashing his sticks against the surface of the snare drum so that it becomes a terrible sounding instrument.
In conclusion, your snare will sound like shit because it is being played by a human who has made no effort to improve its sound.
However, if he had a desire to improve his playing skill and the ability to do so as well as being surrounded by people with higher musical standards then your snare would not sound like shit. But this is most likely not possible.
