Who was born first the chicken or the egg?
The first question we must ask is: What is the egg? Is it a substrate of life, or merely a part of one? In order to answer this question, we must consider such things as 'What does it mean for something to be alive?' and 'What does it mean for something to have been created by another entity?'
Let us consider the latter first, creating an egg. Egg creation seems to be a task better assigned to a chicken than otherwise. From what I understand of the chicken, it is small and lives in groups; however, there are no eggs that identify themselves as such living on their own outside a larger organism. It is likely that they lack sufficient intelligence to create an egg without intervention by another capable entity.
The chicken itself, however, is a substrate of life. I am not yet fully convinced that it is alive in and of itself; however, there are several indications that suggest the contrary.
If the chicken is not alive, then it is likely a creation of another entity. It seems that there are two possibilities for such an entity: God or man.
God, being all-powerful and having created everything in existence, would logically be responsible for the chicken's creation.
Man, on the other hand - although not all-powerful and lacking divinity - has been shown to be able to create entities in his own image (e.g., chickens).
