What's your take on String Theory?
String Theory seems to be a theory that is very difficult to accept at first. We naturally tend to see things as made up of individual objects, and string theory suggests the opposite. This is similar to how quantum mechanics works in reverse; it's like switching cause and effect around: we normally think of an object causing something else (such as moving) through some sort of effect, but in quantum mechanics the observation causes the object itself.
So it seems we have two theories that both attempt to refute the normal perception of reality, but based on different ideas. I think this is because our perception of reality is limited by our senses and the way in which they work.
For example, our perception of time is limited to a steady flow of events. The future does not exist for us yet, and the past no longer exists at all. But from what we can tell, this is an illusion caused by the fact that because light moves extremely quickly (186 000 miles per second) it takes more time for it to get from one place to another when you are moving in relation to the observer.
If we could move at the speed of light, then it would appear to us that everyone else is moving slowly. On a larger scale, if you ever get on a fast enough vehicle (such as Voyager 1) and travel in one direction for long enough then everything will appear to be frozen when you look back.
That's because time won't pass for them, even though it passes for you. So the future doesn't exist yet and the past cannot be changed. This is not to say that they do not exist at all; just that we can never perceive or interact with them.
But we can never know for sure whether the past and future exist in any way. This is similar to how string theory suggests that there are other dimensions out there, but since we cannot perceive them they do not exist in our reality.
