What's your opinion on Stoicism?
Stoicism is an interesting philosophy. I find several of its teachings to be very valuable, and they often provide a good framework for navigating life's difficulties.
For example, the idea of living in accordance with virtue seems like a good one. It is often said that virtue is its own reward, but this notion has some significant problems.
In the first place, virtue is a rather subjective concept. What one person may consider virtuous, another may find abhorrent.
Moreover, it seems doubtful that any virtuous person's life will be entirely free of suffering. It may well be the case that some amount of suffering is inevitable for all people at all times.
Therefore, it seems more reasonable to conclude that virtue is not an end in itself. Instead, its purpose may be fulfilled through the pain and suffering which we inevitably experience.
This is a powerful idea, and it can be useful in helping us to navigate our way through life, even though the notion of virtue may not be entirely accurate.
