What usage pattern do you predict for Handshake DNS protocol over the next 20 years?
Given the events of the past decade, I believe that Handshake DNS will be used extensively as a method to transport data from one computer system to another. It is easy and flexible and does not lock you into any particular vendor or infrastructure. It could even be adapted for use on devices other than computers such as cell phones (if they still exist). By adapting it in this way you can make it more secure by preventing injections of viruses etc. For example if your phone was a Handshake client then when it attempted to connect up with the network tower/cell site, any attempt at hacking would merely cause an error message rather than allowing access without permission. This is because all incoming connections are blocked until authorization has been given.
The main drawback of Handshake DNS is that it does not have any normalization so if your environment has a small number of machines (such as in low earth orbit) then it could be difficult to do name resolution. Normalization is the process by which a Handshake client will try all possible variations on the domain name until one works or there are no more alternatives left.
In this case the only alternative left would be to ask a human how to resolve that particular domain name (or perhaps run an application program which uses semantic analysis of words). However, in 20 years I think it is safe to say we will have moved beyond the need for humans and computers talking directly to each other. Instead they will work together using computer programs as intermediaries. These programs can provide normalization by trying all possible combinations until one works. Handshake DNS does not support normalization, but if you are prepared to spend more time on searching for a connection then there are ways around this.
I do not believe that normalization will be a problem in 20 years. By this time we should have built even more sophisticated tools which can solve the issue of limited networks connections etc.
I think the greatest threat to Handshake DNS is monopolization by a single corporation or government. Today it seems that all information, and therefore power is controlled by companies like Google, Facebook, Yahoo etc.. In 20 years I believe we will see more of this consolidation of power until eventually there are only two or three huge corporations which control everything. Once these entities consolidate their power then they can start to restrict access in any way they choose.
As if this was not bad enough, there is also the threat of government control and censorship. Anyone who has followed the news about governments around the world will be aware that many see free access to information as a major threat to their authority. This is why they try so hard to impose internet censorship.
