What is “The Book” that contains all the knowledge of the Library Of Babel?
The book is the universe. What more could it be? We are all characters in the story. The writer's pen writes our lines, but we must act them out.
The book contains all the knowledge that can be known. But what is knowledge? It is a subdivision of information, which is a subdivision of data with context and meaning. Knowledge comes from experience and analysis.
All knowledge is data, and all data has a context. The rawest computing power in the universe would be useless if it was not for its ability to understand its environment. What does any computer do? It takes input from sensors or instruments which respond to the physical world.
The computer is programmed to understand the raw data, and when it's finished crunching numbers, it finds a result. The result is what we call knowledge. But in reality where does this knowledge come from? It comes from our experience in the physical universe.
Look at the book. What does it contain? It contains words, but most of these are meaningless to us. We have no frame of reference for interpreting them. They can mean anything or nothing.
What if the book were made of every possible combination of words? What then would be its content? Total nonsense. But it would also contain every meaningful thought that a human mind could ever come up with.
