What, in your experience, is the funniest joke?
In my experience, the funniest joke ever told is a joke which you have never heard before. It is not funny because it has a punch line or builds up to something funny. Rather it's based on an absurd premise which reveals how human beings think about certain things and our secret wishes as well as fears.
Humor is a way of dealing with the existential fear and absurdity which is part of what it means to be human. We are all conscious beings, aware that one day we will die and lose everything we love. The world itself seems absurd because anything can happen at any time for no real reason.
You see, everything we experience in life is part of a 'joke'. As human beings we are constantly coming up with explanations for the things around us. After awhile it becomes clear that all these explanations fail to account for some things, ultimately leaving us with only one explanation: The world itself is absurd.
Everything we know and experience is based entirely on the assumption that there are things which exist objectively. But what if this is not true? What if nothing exists outside of our own minds, or only some select things do?
This thought can lead to a sense that our minds are ultimately isolated and alone. This is the cause of anxiety and fear, which we must then deal with using humor.
Here's an example: A well-known joke is to say 'I'm going to throw a knife at your throat,' then actually do it and see the person's reaction. The reason this joke works so well is because of how our minds work.
