What are numbers?
Numbers are the most basic part of mathematics, so it's very hard to talk about them. I will start by trying to clarify what numbers mean. Numbers help you compare things, and count how many of something there is; for instance, they tell me that I have two hands (I'm not sure if you understand what a hand is).
Numbers are also useful for calculating and measuring things. I can use numbers to tell me how tall you are, or the temperature of your house.
But I cannot tell you what a number is. Numbers are real, but they have no solid form like my hands do.
Numbers are the language of mathematics, and they can be used to express more complex ideas about things like geometry or calculus. I'll explain the meaning of some numbers here:
Zero is the number that means nothing. It isn't a negative number, because it doesn't mean 'less than zero'.
One is the number that means 'one thing'. It's not negative, because it doesn't mean 'less than one' - I can have three or four hands.
