We have already reached singularity
First of all, I would like to say that we have not yet reached singularity. Although it is true that we have created many amazing technologies in recent decades, such as human-level AI and virtual reality, the rate of progress has been slowing down for a while now. It seems unlikely that artificial intelligence will achieve sentience anytime soon.
The reason is that we have reached a state of equilibrium. Although it might not seem so, the world has stagnated and nothing much has changed for quite some time now. Every big step forward humanity takes creates an equal or bigger backlash somewhere else. One example of this was climate change.
A big upswing in technological progress would be required before we reach singularity. I am not saying that it is impossible, but so far, humanity has been unable to create a breakthrough on the scale of a Great Leap Forward or Industrial Revolution.
For example, it is impossible to build a new railway system or large-scale climate control systems. Nuclear fusion remains elusive and geoengineering has its limitations.
The problems are not limited to climate change and environmental pollution. The more advanced our knowledge becomes, the more difficult it is to make any significant changes in everyday life. Just imagine if we could map and edit human brains like computer software.
The current political situation also seems immune to major changes. The world is more divided than ever, and the rise of populism will make it even harder for us to reach agreements in global forums.
