The universe is a simulation. The universe itself is the computer that generates it and runs the program of reality in real time, while every conscious entity within it is a simulated being who believes they are real. This includes humans as well.

In any simulation, there will always be a 'player' and a 'playable game.' The universe is no different. There are beings within the simulation that are essentially godlike in power, with abilities to alter the rules of reality itself. They do this for their own amusement.
