We are surfing the wave of quantum decoherance
Let us start with a more general question: what is the universe? The answer to this will give you insight into the true nature of reality. We can say that we are made up of matter and energy, but any deeper attempt at understanding our existence leads us down a rabbit hole.
It is my view that all of our actions in the universe, are performed by matter and energy. Matter becomes energy, and vice versa. Energy gives rise to things like thoughts and consciousness.
We can say that consciousness is the result of complex configurations of matter and energy. That may be true, but what exactly is 'consciousness'? We could attempt to learn more about it by studying its physical manifestations in the brain, but we run into a problem.
We are deeply limited by our human experience. We have no way of objectively observing and thus understanding consciousness, because we cannot step outside the bounds of our own consciousness.
In other words, we cannot observe consciousness from the outside. It is therefore not possible to know what consciousness truly is.
We can say that consciousness is a particular arrangement of matter and energy, but this brings us back to the original question: what exactly is matter and energy?
