To think you need a mind; birth marks the creation of a mind, death marks the destruction of a mind.
I think in order to understand what 'mind' is, we must first examine what we mean by the word and its usage. I have searched for a basic definition of mind, but there are many different aspects of it that can be discussed. However, two things came up when looking at this topic: one is about human minds and another is about conscious beings or living organisms.
The unique thing about human minds is that they have the ability to arbitrarily create symbols with which we can communicate. Language allows humans to share information and ideas, as well as beliefs. It's an abstraction of what we think, making it easier for us to understand each other than if all communication was done in person or by gesture.
In a way, language is the mind. Can you imagine communicating with someone without using any symbols whatsoever? It would be very difficult to describe anything because there are no words already created for it.
For example, if you were to create a dictionary of all the concepts you know and their definitions, it would not only be impossible to use because of its size but also useless as the concepts that make up your mind are constantly changing. You could never find anyone else with exactly the same set of ideas.
This is what separates humans from other animals. Other living organisms have the ability to learn, but they do not have language or any other form of symbols with which to communicate.
So, we can say that the mind is made up of symbols and ideas. Now, what about conscious beings? Consciousness and self-awareness are also unique to living organisms.
