You know, I've been thinking about the nature of consciousness for a while now. And you know what I think? Consciousness may not exist.

Let's start with the behavior of a conscious entity: say, me. When I am not conscious, I do not exhibit any signs of consciousness. I don't feel pain or pleasure. There is no sign that my mental processes are going on at all.

I enter a state of unconsciousness after I fall asleep. At first, my consciousness starts to fade away slowly... then faster and faster until I cannot remember who or where I am. Then suddenly -- BOOM! -- the lights come on in my head again and all is well.
