The ultimate purpose of life is to figure out how to prevent universe from dying; it is an eternal task.
So, first of all, you can’t prevent universe from dying. It is happening everywhere and every moment at the same time. However, there are hundreds of billions of galaxies in the Universe with each being composed out millions upon millions of stars so as long as one single star is still shining somewhere in the Universe then its light will continue to carry information that will provide a basis for new life forms to come into existence.
So, as long as the Universe still exists, life will continue to exist. It is not quite clear whether this new life will be intelligent and self-conscious or not but there are good reasons for thinking that it might be possible.
As far as the ultimate purpose of life is concerned, then it appears to be some kind of a mission for mankind. The main task that you need to accomplish in order to secure the future existence and development of intelligent life forms in the Universe is exploring space.
The idea is that the future of intelligent life will depend on humanity’s ability to continue exploring and expanding into space in order to find new places for further development. Under this assumption, then mankind has an ultimate purpose – it must expand into space.
As soon as the last star in our galaxy dies, humanity will need to move on into space and colonize other galaxies. In many respects it is similar to what happens with people when they are old – they need to leave their homes and move into new places where they can continue living.
So, for me the ultimate purpose of life is to colonize space.
