The monkey saw a banana hovering in the air but couldn’t catch it.
Monkeys are always trying to catch things. Gorillas, too; those guys love bananas. The monkey saw that the banana was in the air, and tried to grab it but couldn’t. He started jumping up and down on his hind legs like a total goon because he wanted so badly to get his hands on that banana. But then he fell down and hit his head on a rock.
The monkey had to be taken away on a stretcher. You know, it’s possible the banana just wasn’t very ripe yet and he didn’t like that.
But maybe there was something wrong with the banana. Maybe it wasn’t ripe, and that made him sad. Or maybe it had some kind of disease or something. I know they have these new bananas now where you can actually buy them a week before they ripen; pretty neat idea.
Of course, there’s also the possibility that maybe he was hallucinating. Have you ever been on drugs? If you have, I bet you know what it's like to see bananas floating around in midair. Oh yeah.
Sometimes when you take drugs, things that aren’t really there seem totally real and totally vivid. You might think that bananas are floating around in midair, or maybe even talking to you.
And then there are other times when you take drugs and things that are actually there seem to disappear. For example, a banana sitting right in front of your very eyes may seem to turn into an orange or something.
