Space Colonization
If we have no constraints on time or energy, then the best course of action for human society is to expand outward into space until we take full advantage of all available resources. There seems to be a lot more room out in space for us to grow and flourish. Many people fear that this could lead to an expansionist mindset where humanity spreads over everything, but I don't think that's true at all.
Just as with the expansion of human societies on Earth, there will likely be varying levels of sophistication in these colonies. Some might have more automation and artificial intelligence than others, while some may even be fully automated with no humans at all. I believe this is a good thing, as it ensures that every niche on Earth can be filled by someone.
The urge to explore and expand outward is something that's in our DNA. It's what made the first humans leave Africa, and it's what put a human on the moon. We're hard-wired to want more room when we get crowded, so going into space is really not much of an irrational decision.
Our species is not done on Earth. We have yet to fully discover and explore our home planet, let alone chart out the rest of the universe! So it would be very short-sighted for us to never go into space simply because we fear that maybe these colonies could be independent one day.
If we never go into space, what will our great-great grandchildren think of us? That we were a species that was afraid to live up to its true potential?
Going into space is a big project that will require the cooperation of our species, and this means we'll have to put aside old conflicts and rivalries. We'll need to work together as one humanity if we want it to succeed. This kind of attitude change will take time, but I believe it's worth doing.
