Reflect on Split Brain syndrome.
Split brain syndrome is a very interesting phenomenon. It shows us the importance of socialization and identity as well as how our brains are geared towards thinking about ourselves in relation to others.
It shows us how important it is to have a consistent identity, and be able to see yourself as an integrated individual in relation to others. If you did not do this then there would be no way for you to know that you are the same person over time.
Imagine if you were unable to connect the two sides of your brain at all. You would be incapable of knowing that there was another side of you, in fact you wouldn't even know that there was any such thing as 'you' or an integrated entity capable of experiencing, thinking and feeling.
The two hemispheres of the split brains' brain are unable to talk with each other, so they become like separate personalities. Each side will have their own stream of consciousness and sense of self.
However, if you were to ask the patient which side was in control they would say that it's me. So even though there are two minds with their own thoughts and stream of consciousnesses, each one believes itself to be a single coherent entity.
So this shows us that the brain, and identity is a social construct. In order to have an integrated sense of self you need others.
