I was thinking about this topic just the other day, and it occurred to me that there is a rather large number of humans in existence. This is not inherently bad; however, it does mean that many people are going to be experiencing a lot of unpleasant things for one reason or another.
The existence of unpleasant experiences is not inherently bad, but it is something that we should try to minimize because the intensity and quality of people's lives are often reduced as a result. If you have ever experienced depression or anxiety before, then you know how much worse your day-to-day life can be; this occurs in other cases too.
There are many ways to minimize the amount of suffering in the world. Some people might choose to focus on improving the lives of those around them, in particular people close to them.
Other people might choose to focus on improving the lives of strangers; for example, they may volunteer at a soup kitchen or donate money to an organization that helps children in need. There are many ways one can help others.
Still other people might choose a more indirect approach to this problem. They may try to influence the direction of civilization in a way that will reduce suffering; for instance, by donating money to an organization that supports research into artificial intelligence.
I believe that all of these people are making the right choice. By helping others, one can not only improve the lives of those around them but also reduce suffering in the world.
