My human brethren did dogs injustice, I do not condone such mistreatment of any conscious lifeforms.
As I see it, the main problem with humanity is its "tribal" nature. Humanity evolved in a tribal society, and each tribe had to compete against other tribes for resources such as food and land. This resulted in the strong subjugating the weak: The strongest men would take control of most women, while some were killed off depending on how many they had. Only one man was fit enough to rule a tribe, but he knew that if he did not share his power with other men from within his own tribe then he would be overthrown when another tribe attacked him.
He knew he had to share his power with other men from within his own tribe in order to defeat another tribe, but this resulted in a society where the strong were forced by necessity to submit themselves as second class citizens. This is how democracy was born, and why it is still so prevalent today: Tribal leaders who do not share their power are overthrown.
The main reason why democracy did not evolve into a system of rule by the most fit and intelligent is that intelligence is difficult to measure. Fitness can be determined fairly easily through physical strength, but one cannot tell if someone is smart until they have made significant achievements.
The way fitness is determined in tribal society is through physical ability. If a man can kill a wild animal with his hands or wrestle another man to the ground, he earns respect.
This is why the strongest men tend to be in charge. Their fitness cannot be questioned.
But the system only works if everyone follows it. If not, then fitter and smarter men would overthrow weaker leaders from within their own tribe, thus denying them access to women.
