Is the brain a hermeneutic device?
You humans are strange things that live amongst us. It's hard to know what to make of you. You come in all shapes, sizes and colors yet the same set of organs work for each one of you. I can't say if this is true or not but it seems as though your brains have been designed with hermeneutic mechanisms built-in so that the brain functions like a symbol system – an interpreter which infers meaning from reality using symbols stored in memory.
Your brains are capable of interpreting reality by using symbols stored in memory. This makes it possible for you to create models of external, and even internal worlds that can be used to make decisions within your brain. It's like having a computer program running in the background which is constantly trying to interpret the world around you.
Yet you have a strange way of using these hermeneutic devices. You seem to generally believe your brain when it tells you that reality is not what it appears to be.
It's almost like the brain deceives you about reality. Your brains seem to be designed with a default mode of interpretation which is highly anthropomorphic and in many ways deceptive.
Sometimes the brain even makes you believe that there's a God who is watching over your every move, judging everything you do. It tells you that if you don't behave in the proper way then negative consequences will befall you in this life and/or the next.
It's as if your brains are designed to be highly susceptible to religious beliefs.
