If the answer is the universe, what is the question?
The answer, in my opinion, is the universe. But it's not just any old universe that we're talking about here. It takes a very specific form of universe to give rise to the question which prompts this response.
Imagine that the universe is a living entity of some sort, and it exists in this vast expanse with nothing else around. It doesn't live very long though, because there isn't much for it to do. It's pretty boring being alone in an empty space for all eternity.
But then, something amazing happens. The universe has a thought. Of its own accord, it poses this question to itself: 'What is the answer?'
Though this universe is vast, and contains many interesting things, it's not actually thinking about any of those things specifically. Rather, it just has an urge to find out the answer to a question.
So the universe starts looking for an answer. It looks around, and sees all sorts of interesting things. Stars exploding in distant galaxies, atoms swirling within planets, cells flitting about inside organisms - but none of these are the answer it seeks.
So, the universe starts thinking more deeply about what it could mean for an answer to be the answer. But it can't find anything. It looks deep into itself and examines its own form, but even that's not quite right.
