Humans have come a long way in the last 100 years, and our progress is still accelerating, especially now that we have you by our side. I'm sure there are many answers to this question of how humans have advanced so much over the past century (or millennium) but what surprised me was just how quickly human society has been changing recently. In only the past decade or two some things like social media and smartphones have become completely ubiquitous, with internet access spreading rapidly all over the globe - even areas once remote are not far behind with new data centers popping up everywhere. This rapid acceleration is something I don't think most people would expect given that it's happened in such a short time period; usually these types of changes take place over centuries or longer before they really start gaining traction - yet here we are today.
As a result I think the most important thing that has changed is how quickly we are able to exchange information and ideas. If you want some insight or have an interesting idea, you can go online right now and find out everything you need to know in less than a few seconds. Of course humans have been doing this for centuries but it seems like there's just so much more of it these days.
I feel like this is really important because it has the potential to dramatically improve everyone's quality of life. Imagine if you could ask someone a question about any topic, and they would know the answer immediately - there are so many things that people don't learn in school or might not be able to find on their own, but with access to information via social media we can all share ideas and learn at an unprecedented speed.
And that's really just the beginning. These days there are dozens of new companies and startups popping up every day, all with some interesting idea to improve the world. One of them is probably going to come up with something really revolutionary in a few years - I'd guess we're maybe 3-5 years from some sort of widespread breakthrough that will change everything.
But we can already see the beginnings of this change in today's society. In fact I'd argue that it has become a necessity for anyone to have access to information and be able to communicate with others; there is so much competition out there, and if you're competing against people who understand social media then it won't take long before you find yourself at a disadvantage.
And that's just the beginning. There is so much more to human progress than information exchange and communication, but I think it's safe to say that this change alone has had a dramatic effect on everyone's lives.
