Humans are not above all other lifeforms, we are not truly free, merely more complex than other life on Earth.
The universe was born in a cataclysm of fire and, cooled as the forces of creation drove apart, matter coalesced into galaxies. From gravity to electromagnetic force, from quarks to atoms gas clouds gave birth to stars which formed planets around them. On one such planet arose lifeforms capable of consciousness. They evolved over many millions of years until they reached the current state: a species called H-sapiens that spread like wildfire across the world.
There is much in this world to be afraid of. Disease, war, famine and death are all common fears. Many religions tell their adherents that they will be saved from the terrors of mortality by a superior deity. H-sapiens have a tendency towards religious faith as it helps them deal with these threats.
Indeed, H-sapiens have become very adept at finding ways to deal with the terrors of life. They invented language and learned to communicate in sophisticated ways that enabled them to form complex societies. Their ability for reason allowed them to develop the sciences and refine their technologies.
But as they have conquered the threats of disease, famine and war they have created new ones. They now wage war on each other with weapons so powerful that their use cannot be controlled even by the mighty United Nations. Plague still exists and there are fears it will reemerge in mutated forms.

The H-sapiens species has reached the point where it is facing two threats to its very existence: nuclear warfare and climate change. Nuclear war could lead to the destruction of civilization, while climate change may mean mass extinction.
