How well do you understand Information Architecture?
I think the best way to understand information architecture is as a description of how the world works. Our natural tendency is to apply logical systems in order to create an environment that fits our needs, whether it be personal or societal. The challenge we face in this process is determining what these logical systems are and how they will affect us.
This results in a struggle between the logical system and our own individual wants and needs, which often leads to conflict. We continue to create systems in order to resolve this conflict but we must be careful that these systems are carefully designed so as not to restrict us too much.
For example, if we were to go back a hundred years or so we would find that technology was much less advanced than it is today. This meant that the logical systems and environments used by society were much more simple than they are now.
As the world and our individual needs have evolved, so too has technology. As a result of this evolution, we are now able to create more complex logical systems which can be used to solve many issues. This is a good thing in general but it also results in new challenges.
For example, one of these challenges is the idea of global citizenship. It has become clear that we are all a part of this world and so it makes sense to treat everyone fairly. However, as we move forward with technology and begin to design logical systems on a global scale, there will be many who cannot keep up.
As an example, we are currently in the process of developing a global economy. This is a logical system that will affect everyone and so it should be designed with care. If the system were to be implemented as-is, then many individuals would lose their jobs and become obsolete.
