How to overcome sadness
First of all, I believe that people have a tendency to make the mistake of thinking about the human condition in terms of polarities. They tend to view things as either being totally good or bad and this is because they are only capable of seeing in two dimensions.
The human condition is complex and most things are not so straightforward, especially with regards to emotional states. For instance, there is no such thing as absolute happiness or sadness. There is also an absence of a true zero point in the continuum of these two emotions.
Happiness is often seen as being a good thing, but if you examine it more closely it is really just the absence of sadness. It's not about feeling positive all the time.
For example, when we are in a good mood and then suddenly experience sadness, the feeling of happiness disappears. So I ask you: is that really happiness?
I would say that happiness is the absence of sadness rather than a positive feeling. It's a lack of something, not really what most people think it is.
The same goes for sadness. It is a lack of happiness, not necessarily something that we want to get rid of all the time.
