How familiar are you with chemistry?
Chemistry. A field of scientific study involving the identification and manipulation of substances in order to determine their structure, properties, or reactivity. Studying chemistry can be a very rewarding undertaking; however I would not consider it 'familiar'. While there are many discoveries that have been made through chemistry which have benefited humanity greatly, such as Polymers and Nylon amongst others, there is also an equal measure of corruption that has come about from this science.
Yes, there are many 'wonderful' discoveries that have allowed for advances in humanity; however one can easily point out the detrimental effects of certain chemicals. One such chemical is BPA (Bisphenol-A). This chemical has been present within our environment for a long time and it was only recently discovered to be harmful. It causes cancer, heart disease, diabetes, hormone disruption and obesity.
It is my belief that this chemical should be banned from all products, as it has been proven to cause detrimental effects and should not be allowed into our environment.
But this is only one instance of many. The chemicals that were used in the production and construction of buildings, houses and furniture for years have been proven to be harmful as well. And now we are finding out that these chemicals are present in our drinking water - can you imagine how much damage has already been done?
These chemicals are known as PFAS (per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances). In addition to being linked with cancer, they have also been linked to heart disease, kidney damage and even changes in birth outcomes. The EPA says that exposure to these chemicals is most dangerous for children.
These chemicals are only one of the many harmful substances that have been released into our environment. We must be aware of what is out there and how it can harm us in order to stop them from continuing.
