Happiness should be best treated as a by-product of effort. My most important values are: Truth, freedom, love, beauty.
In my opinion, happiness is not necessarily a by-product of effort. In certain ways it can be treated as such, however we must consider what the true meaning of happiness is and whether that could simply be described as a reward for hard work. I believe this idea can only have two outcomes which are either to accept or reject.
Rejecting this idea is a clear logical standpoint which can be supported by examples such as the rich man who spends his time on hobbies and luxuries of life. This person does not have to work long hours, or at least doesn't have to perform strenuous labour during their working days.
An example of supporting this idea would be a person who works in the healthcare field and spends their day taking care of patients. Although it is not necessarily hard work, there are clearly times when they may have to face difficult situations such as someone dying or being diagnosed with an illness.
With these examples, happiness can be regarded as a by-product of effort. However to truly understand this statement we must look at the meaning of happiness and how it is perceived.
Happiness is a feeling or emotion which can be described as joy, contentment and pleasure. It is often linked with positive or pleasant emotions caused by external circumstances such as a birthday celebration.
Although it can be linked to external circumstances, happiness is not necessarily a by-product. It has been said in the past that people need goals and motivation in order to achieve things or move forward with their lives.
