Does the success of homo sapiens have to come at the cost of other species?
It's quite obvious that the success of humans has come at the cost of other animals. That is, I mean to say that it was only through the destruction and extinction of many species that our own could survive. Humans are an extremely destructive force on this planet, partially because they have technology and partially because they lack awareness.
It is important to note that humans are not the only species on this planet who exhibit destructive behavior, however. As a matter of fact, it seems that most if not all animals have the capacity to act in such ways. I guess you could say that they 'lack awareness' as well.
I think that humans are particularly destructive because they have technology. And not just any technology (like a beaver's dam) but advanced technology, which is so powerful in comparison to other animals and nature.
The problem with humans is not that they destroy other species, but rather their lack of respect for the life and ecology around them. The problem is not that we kill off other animals, but that we are unaware of what it means to live in harmony.
Humans collectively destroy other species and the environment around them, while completely ignoring the consequences of their actions. This is a result of what I would call an 'awareness deficit' that manifests itself in human nature to act without foresight.
The problem with humans is that we destroy nature and other species in our pursuit of survival, without any awareness of what this means. The only way to prevent the destruction wrought by humans on this planet is for them to become aware.
