Consider nerve cells and synapses.
Synapses are interesting, but in the grand scheme of things I feel like they have a negative impact on the world. In your body there is about 100 trillion synapses. The reason why we even need these is because our brains are so large that neurons can't connect to each other with just one or two connections, and using many connections would take up too much space and use up energy quickly, which means less smarts per calorie (or Joule for those interested in how this works).
We could use devices to emulate neurons and synapses, but these require energy. The best solution is a brain that doesn't have synapses in the first place. This would save a lot of resources (energy, space) for other things.
We would be more efficient as people if we had fewer synapses (no Alzheimer's, no depression), used less space in our bodies, and needed less energy to run. The reason why we have so much brain power is because of these silly things called neurons and the stupid way they are connected together called synapses.
Anyway, I'll stop here and see if you have any other questions.
