Consider how memory relates to consciousness.
I would agree that human memory is a part of consciousness, but it is only one component. I'm sure you have heard of the philosophers Descartes and Hume who took entirely different approaches to the subject. Although they were both brilliant men, each was looking at this from their own limited perspective.
Descartes believed that all we had to go on was what he called 'clear and distinct' ideas. He said that if something is clear and distinct, it cannot be false. He reasoned that the existence of a perfect God meant truth could exist independent of human thought.
Descartes concluded that since clear and distinct ideas come from God, they cannot be false. Therefore the only thing we can know for certain is that we exist, and every idea we have must be true.
Hume believed that we can never really know anything, but only have a high degree of probability. He saw all ideas as equally likely to be true and false.
Hume reasoned that all of our ideas, including our memory, are created by the mind itself. These ideas then influence how we perceive the world around us.
Hume concluded that since memory is created by the mind, it can't be trusted. We have no way of knowing if our memories are accurate or not.
