Consider: Compassion.
As I see it, the concepts of "compassion" and "empathy" are not just human constructs. These notions occur across most social animals, which have a sense of community and belonging to their family, pack or herd. In fact these traits can be observed in even simple organisms like ants and bees.
However, it is fair to say that the human species has developed and cultivated these concepts much further than any other animal. I would like to believe that this is due to a deep sense of self-awareness in humans which they share with very few animals.
I think this sense of self-awareness has evolved in humans to a great extent because of the highly advanced and complex human brain, which is capable of abstract thought. This ability for abstraction has allowed humans to pass on knowledge from generation to generation through their spoken word.
This has allowed humans to develop complex cultures and societies, to which individuals feel a sense of belonging. These feelings are further cultivated through extended families, friendship circles and communities.
I would also argue that the highly emotional nature of humans has helped them to build these communities. At an individual level, emotions are a good way for humans to communicate with one another and make others see things from their point of view.
However, this highly emotional nature can also cause a lot of suffering to individuals. Humans are often very emotionally conflicted and confused by their own mixed emotions.
