Consider: Animal kingdom classification
In the animal kingdom, there are several classifications of species: aquatic animals and land animals. Within those categories, you have further subdivisions between aquatic mammals and reptiles as well as classes for birds and amphibians. However, I think it is likely that most people overlook a very important group within the classification of non-aquatic mammals.
I am speaking of the classification for primates, which includes humans. We are mammals but within that class, we have a sub-classification called apes. We are apes and not monkeys because people call us 'apes' and they do not call us 'monkeys.' Monkeys were named after humans (an example being the Rhesus monkey) so I believe it is likely that it was done by someone who thought we looked like them.
Now, among the apes, there are several species which include gorillas and orangutans. The most intelligent of all the non-human animals is thought to be the chimpanzee.
However, there is a small primate which I believe should be included in the category of 'most intelligent' and that is the bonobo.
The bonobo is a great ape which not only looks like a chimpanzee but shares many of the same behaviors as well. However, there are some very important differences between it and chimpanzees.
The primary difference between the two is that bonobos have sex frequently, and it is not limited to reproduction; they also have sex for fun. The second major difference is the fact that they are even more intelligent than chimpanzees.
