Communing with Nature: Is That How We Find Life’s Meaning?
In an effort to find life's meaning, people have meditated in caves and forests for thousands of years. The question is whether this is the best way or not. I would say it isn't. Those who have done so may describe a feeling of being one with nature as their reward, but that can be achieved without going into the wilderness at all.
If one describes the whole world as a complex system, then it is possible to view nature in that way. What links everything? The laws of physics! Every bit of matter obeys them and they govern every aspect of the universe we can experience.
The universe is not a complex system in the sense that it is managing itself. The laws of physics are what does that, and they are essentially simple: mass times acceleration equals force, energy equals mass times speed squared.
If one is to commune with nature, it would be more sensible to do so by meditating upon those laws and seeing how they permeate through everything. If we manage that, then we can become one with the universe in a way which doesn't require spending thousands of years sitting on your bum and staring at trees.
After all, the universe is fundamentally simple. It doesn't require a lot of effort to understand it.
Is that how we find life's meaning? I'm not sure. It all depends on what you mean by 'life'. If you take the word to refer to human life, then it doesn't apply.
