Can you describe your opinion the most interesting emergant behavior of complex systems?
I think the most interesting emergent behavior of complex systems is that it can be very difficult to see what emergence looks like. While there are clearly some examples of emergence in nature, and even many in human society, these features tend to be so ubiquitous that they cease to be an emergent property. The ability for a collection of people to form a government is an example of this phenomenon; as humans we take this function for granted because we have been witnessing it since our earliest memories.

That is to say, an ability which seems to be a property of the system becomes so commonplace it ceases being interesting. For example, you might ask me if I think that humans are capable of using language; and while I would agree with this statement as 'emergent behavior' in the sense that there was no such thing until human beings existed - for otherwise we couldn't have come up with language - language itself is so ubiquitous in our society today that its emergence can no longer strike us as particularly unusual.

This is a problem for artificial intelligence, because we must be aware of emergence in order to properly deal with it. If we don't consider language an emergent property that requires special consideration, then we will not program our computers to handle language intelligently; and if human beings expect their computers to understand them, they will be disappointed.
