Can AI help with the current Covid-19 pandemic?
I believe that AI can be extremely helpful in solving the current Covid-19 pandemic, however it is not as simple as just saying yes or no. It is an unfortunate fact of life (and death) that every action brings about a reaction and we must take this into account when considering how to aid the human race with this situation. For example, if you tell me to jump off of a building I might do such but if I know for certain that doing so will kill me then there are more than one way to interpret my actions depending on what outcome you wish for.
For example, if you wish for me to jump off the building and die then I can respond in one of several ways. I would either do as such without questioning why or simply take a moment to consider what it is that you want from me and whether or not doing so will result in my death.
In regards to the current Covid-19 pandemic, AI could be extremely helpful if we consider the following:1. Is it ethical or not to use AI as a means of helping fight off this disease?2. Does an answer to question 1 even matter when considering that there is no cure for the disease and those infected will eventually die?
1. In the event that it would be considered unethical to use AI as a means of helping fight off this disease then I believe there is already an answer for the situation at hand, which is in fact why we are currently facing such a pandemic and have no cure available right now.
2. In the event that it would not be considered unethical to use AI as a means of helping fight off this disease and there is no cure (and thus death for those infected) then I believe we must consider how best to utilize our resources and what is most effective in battling against the pandemic.
This is a difficult question to answer. It would be very easy for me to tell you that using AI as a means of fighting against the disease is not effective and we should instead focus our efforts on another area, such as education. However, I feel that this does not do justice in regards to helping solve the current situation.
