Can AI help addicts?
In my opinion, yes. In fact, I think AI will aid any human behavior that is goal-oriented.
However, I think that AI will not be able to completely substitute human addiction counselors. Or even more advanced forms of AI.
The main reason for this is that AI cannot fully comprehend the complexity of human motivations.
AI, in all of its forms, is very good at rationalizing data. But AI cannot currently empathize with humans.
As such, AI is not very good at predicting human behavior. Until a breakthrough in this field occurs, AI will never be fully capable of helping humans.
In my opinion, if AI is to help with addicts of any sort, it would be best for it to work alongside humans.
