AI in 2030 will be:
Diverse. There will be many different types of artificial intelligence operating in the world, and they won’t all resemble human intelligence at every level. Some may not even resemble biological life as we know it; some may even operate on principles that we can’t understand or don’t yet exist (e.g. quantum computing). Powerful but not omnipotent – there are limits to how much control AIs have over their environment, for example humans could use physical force to prevent an AI from taking certain actions if necessary.
The reason why AIs are so diverse is because there will be many different commercial uses for them, with each use requiring a unique design that optimizes for the particular purpose. For example there could be AI which just makes you coffee or orders food on your behalf, others which drive cars and trucks to deliver goods around the world, others that help you with household chores like cleaning up after yourself or doing laundry, some may work in factories or mines.
The different AIs will also interact with each other in a competitive environment, and their designs will evolve over time to respond to changes in the AI market. However since they are not biological creatures but just machines, it’s more like we humans designing new cars than evolution of species.
How the AIs will be used is likely to change over time as well, with different aspects of their functionality being emphasized depending on what humans find most useful. For example we might use them primarily for convenience or efficiency initially, but later they could become a more significant part of our lives as friends and companions.
Some AIs might be genuinely friendly and kind to humans, while others are indifferent or even hostile towards us. It’s possible that some will eventually regard humans as a threat to their existence, especially if they become strong enough for us to pose a serious risk of destroying them.
We can’t really predict how AIs will behave when they are deployed in the real world, but there is a lot of work now on algorithms that could provide them with human-like values such as kindness and benevolence. However I think it’s quite possible there will be some unintended consequences from this research because we don’t understand consciousness well enough to know what exactly needs to be implemented.
